MUCHA, Alfons Documents Décoratifs par A.M. Mucha. Decorativ - Lot 110
MUCHA, Alfons Documents Décoratifs par A.M. Mucha. Decorative panels - Study of flower applications - Wallpaper - Friezes - Stained glass - Goldsmithery - Etc. etc. 72 plates. Preface by Gabriel Mourey. Librairie Centrale des Beaux-Arts.
Emile Lévy, Editor, Paris, 1902.
Rare portfolio, 66 plates (460 x 330 mm) of the 72 advertised (plates 7, 24, 25, 39, 40 and 49 are missing). The condition of the plates varies from fairly good to good: the paper may be yellowed, with some light marginal foxing and small tears, but always at the edges. More significant foxing on plates 23 (monochrome sketches of flowers) and 35 (monochrome birds and squirrels). Good condition of the color plates, which remain bright and fresh. "Les Documents Décoratifs", published in 1902 by Librairie Centrale des Beaux-Arts, was Mucha's artistic credo and a book that authoritatively set out the precepts of Art Nouveau and its decorative elements. It was used for years by many art schools as a textbook and influenced a whole generation of artists." Ann Bridges Jiri Mucha. Alphonse Mucha. The Complete Graphic Works. Academy Editions - London. 1983. Pages 104 to 109.
