Chirvan carpet (warp, weft and wool pile), Northeast Caucasu - Lot 366
Chirvan carpet (warp, weft and wool pile), Northeast Caucasus, circa 1900-1940 240 x 160 This rug features a central ivory cruciform medallion inscribed between two red lisanges and two red cruciform cartouches, all surrounded by a ribbon of geometric motifs on a navy blue background with small flowers. A patterned border frames the composition. "The term Chirvan designates both a type of carpet and a region where a great many carpets are produced. In fact, it's a vast, mountainous region inhabited by a heterogeneous population. It stretches from the Black Sea to the Caspian Sea, forming a natural barrier between Europe and Asia. Chirvans rugs are knotted in cities (Kuba, Dagestan...) and villages (Tchi tchi, lesghi, seikour, Pérépédil.....). Bibliographical reference: SABAHI, T - Splendeurs des tapis d'Orient Ed. Atlas, Paris 1987 p. 285-286 and p.293 Worn and faded
